 THE CATHEDRAL OF HUESCA

THE CATHEDRAL OF HUESCA

The Cathedral of Huesca is a gothic building that was built on the location of one old Muslim mosque.

In year 1,273, the bishop Jaime Sarroca requested aid to Jaime I for the construction of a new cathedral temple that replaced the old mosque. It was a work whose construction was made in different phases and it was extended until year 1.510

As of this the temple in his interior is begining to be decorated . The accomplishment is in charge of an altarpiece to the Valencian sculptor Damián Forment. The altarpiece is elaborated in its totality with alabaster. It represents, in his three main departments, the Way of the Calvary, the Crucifixion and the Descent of The Lord. In addition also we can observe some scenes of the Passion of The Lord and figures of the apostles. The central scene of the Crucifixion is crowned by a vane. Behind of it the Eucharist and the Body of Our Lord was crowned. All the altarpiece is framed by a wood cover very carved sharp by prophets.

Also stained glass windows, some rosettes and a carved choral ashlar masonry in oak and of great beauty were placed

The cover of the Cathedral beautifully is carved with figures of the apostles and other personages of the Bible who form the archivolts, which finish in a precious pointed arch. Between the archivolts, a beautiful tympanum exists and it is decorated too. The cover is protected by the great carved wood eaves.

Inside the Cathedral we can find in addition the chapels to Lastanosa and Sanit Christ of the Miracles, whose miraculous performance cured the plague of the city of Huesca in 1.497
