Status and distribution: Confined to the Western Palearctic, breeding throughout Iberia (except the north coast), Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily and in North Africa from the Souss Valley in Morocco to east-central Tunisia. Has expanded range northwards in recent years and now breeds in southwestern France.

Vagrants recorded in Malta and, increasingly in recent years, Mallorca. Bred in the Balearics for the first time on Menorca in 1998.

Habitat: Towns and villages, cliffs and rocky outcrops, open woodland and cultivated land.
